Artist statement:
My practice pivots around self-explorations of the notion of body, informed by my cultural background as a Puerto Rican, chosen identities and embodied experiences. I’m interested in the different performances that images of the human body have represented throughout history and in how certain images have been codified into the collective visual languages used to enforce social norms. Through my art I attempt to grapple with the blurred lines between internalized social constructions and self-perceptions of embodiment. This personal push and pull is then transformed into a form of abstracted autofiction, where dream-like idealisation and cynical reality coexist within the art object.
Currently, my primary focus is the creation of asexual erotica- erotica that evokes my sensual reality as someone on the furthest end of the asexual spectrum. Using a simulacrum of the visual languages of allosexual erotic artwork and expression, I wish to depict asexual sensuality and sensibility. By fostering sensual relationships to asexual artworks, I propose a deconstruction (momentary or otherwise) of the importance society places on sexual dynamics, with the “goal” of hopefully facilitating questions around the centralization of sex as a mode of understanding what it means to be human.
