Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles D’Avignon (1907) and Jaques-Louis David’s Le Sacre de Napoleon (1807), Carrie (2007) puts the observer into the role of voyeur to a ritual of “initiation” into the role of sexual object. Each of the main figures is represented by an animal: the cat, the octopus and the bird. The cat, the hunter, is a manifestation of the insidious nature of women perpetuating and/or passing down the patriarchal ideals that they themselves were forced to submit to. The figure standing alone, separated from the others by the large strip of darkness, represents the traditional ideal of a woman as an object of desire- non-confrontational, open to leering gazes and acting with performative piety.
