La Bañera (muerte de la frutícola Isabel en el baptisterio/paraíso) was inspired by Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus (c.1480) and Gothic architecture. The observer sees the same scene from three points of views: front, side, and inside. The fruit, which has been used as a yonic symbol in art for centuries, is not averted yet it remains separate from the main figure. In death, the figure finds herself reborn as a being free from the shackles of gender roles that were placed upon her. Paired with obvious religious symbols, her expression is reminiscent of the expression of divine ecstasy that characterized images of Catholic saints. More than just aesthetic decisions, the religious symbols included speak of the contradictory experience of religion as both a vehicle for transcendence and an opressive system.
